Grade 3 and Superheroes
The grade 3 class isn’t bad. A little rowdy, but I’m more comfortable with kids than when I first started this job. It’s easy to warm up and get into a more relaxed mood. Little more difficult while fever sweating. Not much I can do about that, except look like the big, sweaty teacher. Fun.
This class has to answer a question in order to leave, so I ask them to name a superhero. This is how I discovered that “The Hulk” in Chinese is “Green Man” and “Captain America” is “American Leader.”
Jacque Is Over 100
In our dictation classes, they have to listen to a spoken sentence, try to write it down, then break down what each part of it means. These are mostly boring, so I substitute kids names into the sentences. In this case “Jacque was born over 100 years ago” instead of Lincoln. The books think we’re somewhere in February, Lincoln’s birthday. When trying to explain what ‘born’ means, one of the girls said that Jacque was pregnant. Everyone laughed, though he seemed to think that they were laughing at him.
It was confusing today, but slowly getting better. I’m able to understand more of what she says, though it’s still way too fast. If she goes full speed, I can’t follow at all. Josh, my roommate, still has his tutor come most days of the week and they chat for an hour or two. Josh, however, isn’t returning, and is moving to another part of town, so I might be able to pick up where he leaves off. This would probably be a massive improvement. Fingers crossed the tutor is open to it.
Relax
Sickness is largely cleared up, though still kind of off. I had gotten enough work done in the cafe today that I can just relax all evening. Better Call Saul, and Game of Thrones. Not a bad night.
But, like most Mondays, I can’t seem to sleep. I lay awake, thinking about random ideas until I finally pass out after midnight.
